Branch Reports - December 2024

Birmingham Branch

Last month for the Birmingham branch was full of reflection and remembrance for the war heroes of our nation both past and present. We started the month with another productive and well attended branch meeting, with the Leeds branch leader travelling down as the guest speaker. David Smaller gave an inspirational and amazing account of how the Leeds branch is achieving so much in and around the city.

During November, our members attended several memorial services around the Midlands and London leading up to and on remembrance day. On Thursday 21st November 2024 marked the 50th anniversary of the Birmingham pub bombings. We paid our respects at the memorial service which was held in St Philipps Cathedral in the centre of Birmingham.

In December, we will continue to hold social gatherings. Representatives of the Branch have started engaging with community groups and activities, and this will enable us to have a positive impact at a constituency level. We encourage anyone in the West Midlands who agrees with our Agenda to get involved.

Hull Branch

Throughout November the Branch has kept busy with occasional stalls/newspaper sales as well as Brach meetings, which have provided a good way for new recruits to come on board.

We have decided that, going forward, we will focus out efforts and manpower into a single constituency in Hull, with a view to building a reputation in that area as a party, and preparing ourselves for a future election campaign. Before we decide exactly which constituency, the Branch leadership team will examine all of the options based upon where our manpower and resources already are. There are opportunities to carry out canvassing and stalls, and also to start taking an active role in pre-established community groups such as residents committees, neighbourhood watches, etc. These kind of groups DO exist and are usually formed because of issues in the area.

Hull Branch will begin implementing its constituency strategy in the New Year. Anyone in East Yorkshire that wants to assist, should contact us and get involved.

Manchester Branch

For this month's activities, we started off the month with a meeting to discuss and decide our future aims as this branch. The meeting was a huge success and we got more than what we initially expected. The original aim was to find a single short-term and long-term goal. Now we've got more than that and we're going forward.

One of the goals is using the Questionnaires as a way of engaging the public on a personal level. Leeds Branch has pioneered this and it has resulted in some really constructive engagement thus far, and out aim is to replicate the success in our own Branch.

We have also decided to focus our efforts on constituency-level operations going forward, with the target constituency being Salford. When this idea was first put my way I was very excited. I grew up in Salford. I've lived within multiple towns here. This is my old home. I'm now fighting to save my home. What a fulfilling coincidence.

London Branch

The London Branch first began meeting last month, and it has been impressive how quickly the Branch has been able to come up with a strategy, set itself up, and get underway with regular activity.

At the beginning of December the Branch had a day of action in South-East London, with some members spending the afternoon holding a stall, and then others joining us for a social gathering later in the evening. Concurrently to the Branch’s activities, there is also work going on in the background from some of our members to set up an effective cadre of street activists who can carry out constructive actions in the community.

London has an enormous number of people who are desperate for a genuine alternative, but most don’t even attempt to offer one, deeming the task too difficult. There are many opportunities there, and we will take advantage of them.

Leeds Branch

It has been a busy month for Leeds Branch, and a lot has been done in a short amount of time. Throughout November and into the beginning of December, Leeds Branch did the following:

Fresh Food Outreach and Delivery Programme
The Food Outreach and Delivery programme that was detailed in last month’s Branch Report is continuing well. There have been more referrals from residents and struggling people in the South Leeds area, and we aim to provide our people with another food hamper before Christmas. We are grateful to our generous donors who have supported the fundraiser and enabled us to increase the scale of the project. Anyone wishing to support this project can do so.

Canvassing and Surveys of National Issues
The third round of surveys focussed on national issues, specifically the ones highlighted most frequently in the first round. People were asked whether they agreed or disagreed with a series of statements (which reflected our agenda), and the detailed results are published below. As was found previously, many people were happy to even be asked, because Leeds South is one of those areas that the old parties of the system have ignored for decades, one of the reasons why there is permanently low turnout at elections. Things can change, but only when people are given honest, hardworking alternatives that are actually working to improve the area rather than just benefit themselves.

Engagement with Community Organisations
I have continued to engage with local groups and organisations in Beeston and Holbeck. Because of the canvassing and surveys that we did, local community groups wanted to hear what was said, the issues that were raised, so that they could help develop solutions at a local level, particularly to local issues like crime. There are already local groups of residents that help clean up and maintain the parks, do consultations on issues like roads and traffic measures, and help the police develop strategies for dealing with crime. We encourage people everywhere to get involved with these kinds of groups and committees in the areas where they live, because they will be surrounded by people who, ultimately, want to make their area a better place. It is the right attitude and the right mentality. Instead of withdrawing themselves away, our people must take a more active role in their communities on a daily basis.

How can YOU help?
To expand our operations in Leeds South, we need manpower, and people who live in other areas that are willing to work under the Branch to replicate the work that has been done in Beeston and Holbeck. Anyone living in Leeds who is interested should get in touch.
