Since the beginning of the Party, one of the staple activities that our Branches have been doing is street stalls and direct canvassing in town and city centres. Before the NRP, almost all political outreach from nationalists was limited to leafletting, banner drops, or media pieces. These things are good, but they do not create reciprocal engagement, and they offer people no right of reply or dialogue.
But doing direct outreach and tabletop stalls enables that two-way dialogue and forces the National Agenda and the people who present it to have to deal with unscripted questions and situations. It ensures that ideas being presented are honest, and proves the validity of the ideas when the ideas can survive questions and discussion from people that don’t already agree with them.
The reason why virtually no other ‘nationalist’ party carries out this activity is because they are unable to subject the ideas they present to scrutiny, because of obvious flaws or lack of ideological reasoning for their principles. The National Agenda is capable of being subjected to scrutiny because, whether people already agree with it or not, the ideas are reasonable and they make sense.
From a year of direct canvassing across over a dozen branches, there have been a few consistent themes which have to be brought out and should be understood by everyone who advocates for a nationalist party programme:
Firstly, that almost everyone can recognise that mass immigration and demographic change are a problem. They don’t have to be convinced of this. A few incredibly privileged liberals may not see it, but the overwhelming majority of the population can, especially in places that have high levels of immigration, where even immigrants themselves can recognise the damage being caused. What people need to be convinced of, instead, is a way of providing an alternative to a society which has become dependent on immigration to function.
Secondly, that the state of the economy is what most people are most concerned about in reality on a daily basis. Despite the fact that most people will honestly claim to be most concerned about immigration, nobody will ever support anything which will destroy the economy or risk putting them in poverty. They will be willing to listen to any proposed alternative to free market international capitalism, but only if it can be reasoned. Almost everyone will always put any proposed reforms in context of how they will affect the economy.
Thirdly, that the overwhelming majority of people will give a platform to third-position and nationalist ideas, as long as those ideas can be reasoned and aren’t just perceived to be driven by bigotry or irrational hatred of people. The fact that two-way dialogue is offered proves that the ideas are genuine and means there cannot be some hidden or ulterior motive.
Finally, that most people recognise that localised problems (i.e. things that are wrong at local authority level) are the product of national level issues, and that trying to fix things at a purely local level can possibly alleviate the symptoms but will never actually deal with the root cause. Hence why the majority of people do not engage with local elections.
Doing this kind of activity is not about getting X many people to donate money or getting Y number of people to fill out a form and become members of the Party there and then. It is about demonstrating the fact that the people are serious, the ideas are serious, and that they are capable of withstanding unscripted scrutiny from random members of the public. It is something that nationalists as a whole have avoided doing for years, to their detriment, but it is what must be done if we are to prove to people that our ideas must be accepted.
The fact that the Party and its National Agenda are capable of this kind of two-way engagement where few others area, is a testament to the quality of its ideas and, ultimately, its long-term prospects. Populist grievance machines or vibes-based social clubs will always exist, but as time goes on less and less people will be interested in those things because the substance behind the ideas is not worth their time. And the more serious the political situation becomes, the less time they will have for con men and performing monkeys.
